16 ORGANIZING ACADEMIC COLLEGES: A GUIDE FOR DEANS MODEL II: Dean-Only The Dean-Only model requires little explanation; the dean oversees all academic and support functions not already covered at the institutional level without any associate or assistant deans. Colleges use this model either because of their size (small and manageable) or because the dean chooses to maintain responsibility and authority for all college matters. It is also used when a smaller institution has divided its Arts & Sciences into more than one college and therefore the dean oversees a limited number of departments. In some instances, degrees and programs are organized into academ- ically related clusters rather than departments (e.g., School of Humanities & Social Sciences and School of Sciences) and are headed by a chair or director of that cluster or division.
