1965 At the November meeting of NASULGC, arts and sciences deans adopt the Fuller Report, which proposes the “formation of a separate national organization of the Liberal Arts and Sciences deans of state universities.” Established in 1965 as the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences in State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges. 30 deans sign up for membership 1966 sign up for membership NOVEMBER — First annual meeting held in Washington, D.C. (Sheraton-Park Hotel) First presidents were: • J. Osborn “Oz” Fuller, Ohio State University • W. Todd Furniss, University of Hawaii • John Chalmers, Kansas State University • Philip W. Cartwright, University of Washington • E. Gerald Meyer, University of Wyoming (Dean Meyer goes on to serve as the Secretary-Treasurer until 1975) 9 Jane F. EARLEY MANKATO STATE UNIVERSITY In 1974, I asked about five women deans of the perhaps dozen in attendance to meet for breakfast and thus began the Women’s Breakfast (about which male deans questioned me, “What are you plotting?”)… Through those years on the board and as president, I emphasized diversity and inclusiveness. Because I had received good mentoring from CCAS members, I tried to “pay that forward.” CCAS has always seemed special to me because, while the conferences included the latest trends, they were also full of common sense and humor, made up of interesting folks who understood the heart of our work: the student learning with a teacher who cares passionately about that learning and the life of the mind. 1980-1981
