Early, Mankato State University elected first female president of CCAS 17 1980 “use whatever opportunities they can to promote affirmative action and the equal treatment of all comparable employees” Michael A. BAER UNIVERSITY of KENTUCKY The chief internal issues during my term as president and board member were discussions about expanding to private colleges of Arts and Sciences and growing the organization while function- ing with only a part-time Execu- tive Director with resources very dependent upon the host institution. CCAS began to professionalize, hiring a faculty member as its Executive Director. CCAS also began to offer semi- nars for new chairs and other educational programs beyond the annual meeting. Externally the Arts and Sciences were faced with the polarization and partisanship that Lynne Cheney brought with her to the National Endowment for the Humanities. Conversa- tions also were initiated about how CCAS should convey the importance of the liberal arts and sciences to public policy leaders in Washington. 1987-1988
