51 2012 Kate Conley replaces Carl Strikwerda as Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences at The College of William & Mary and thereby assumes the position of CCAS Treasurer Vickie RUTLEDGE SHIELDS EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY One hot-button issue during my presi- dency was the introduction of MOOCs— how this radical idea threatened traditional pedagogy and financial structures of higher education. Another was the insidious nature of private foundations’ grant programs (i.e., Lumina and Gates) to infuse dollars into higher education institutions to set the political agenda for higher education in this country. I led the organization through a major strategic plan that enhanced the effectiveness of the organization, its ability to serve members and its voice as the lead- ing spokesperson for the liberal arts and sciences. My presidential address focused on the centrality of communication in all we do and the importance of embracing social media to improve our messaging and the pedagogy of our faculty. 2010-2011 2011 The quarterly CCAS Newsletter goes paperless, with the first online edition published in September To sustain momentum from the gains made from the NSF ADVANCE grant, the membership approves the addition of a Standing Committee on Gender Issues CCAS joins the world of social media with the handle @CollegesofAS
