Dr. Ernest Lawrence, ’22 B.S., Chemistry Winner of the 1939 Nobel Prize for Physics for inventing the cyclotron, which split the nucleus of the atom. Lawrence Berkeley and the Lawrence Livermore Laboratories are named after him, as is Lawrencium, Element #103 of the Periodic Table. Dr. John Lawrence, ’26 B.S., Chemistry The younger brother of Ernest, also from Canton, South Dakota, he is widely regarded as the father of nuclear medicine for his pioneering work on using radiation to treat cancer and other diseases.
