RICHARDS UNIVERSITY of DELAWARE My time as dean, 1988-97, were years of significant transition, moving from incremental budgeting to an era of systemic budget cuts and increasing enrollments at public institu- tions. On the bright side, we developed plans for interde- partmental collaboration and support that opened new fields of study such as material culture. Faculty hires were made to support inter- disciplinary scholarship and programs, and we worked to identify community resources, needs, and areas of interest that could enrich student and faculty work. One outgrowth, for example, is the growing strength of academically- enriching internships to help students find a career direction. Another is the opportunity for undergraduate research inte- grated with the academic major, available to all students, not just the exceptional few. 1994-1995
