CERTAIN UNIVERSITY of WISCONSIN, MADISON The “liberal arts” name the oldest subjects of human learning and describe the core of higher education in the US. Roman scholars identified seven artes liberales that originated with the Egyptians and Greeks: three language arts and four mathematical arts. These were subjects for the education of citizens with the freedom (liberty) to study. In the modern research university, it is impossi- ble to develop excellence in professional schools without excellence in the liberal arts. Business depends on excellence in economics, ethics, mathematics, science, and foreign language. Law requires excellence in political science, history, sociology, and public policy. Engineering, agriculture, and the health sciences require excellence in science and mathematics. All require excellence in disciplines devoted to written and oral communication. 1999-2000
